About Us

The Ranttila Scholarship Foundation was founded by Dr. Nicole Ranttila in 2021. The foundation was a longstanding vision for her after the loss of her mother and sister. Kristina Ranttila passed away in 2011 and Sharla Ranttila passed away in 2013. Both women were known for their kindness and giving spirit. To keep that love and generosity alive, Dr. Ranttila created a 501c3 nonprofit to give back to high school graduates. The foundation began in 2022 with a scholarship at Girard High School, the alma mater of Dr. Ranttila and Sharla Ranttila. RSF then added a scholarship in 2023 at LaBrae High School, the alma mater of Dr. Ranttila’s father. 2024 will see the addition of two skilled trades scholarships. New scholarships will then be added each year. Scholarships will be added at Sharon High School, the alma mater of Kristina Ranttila. Then RSF plans to venture into school districts demonstrating need to award students who face financial hardship.

Sharla Ranttila

Sharla Ranttila lit up the world of everyone she knew. She was funny, charming and generous to a fault. People remember her for her quick wit, singing, rapping, and being the life of the party. Sharla was talented with event planning, decorating, makeup, and so much more. She volunteered in the community and especially loved helping with events for Angels for Kids Foundation. She attended Girard High School, Youngstown State University, The Ohio State University, and Kent State University. Before she passed away, Sharla had returned to school at Kent to pursue a degree in criminal justice. After volunteering at the Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center, she felt a strong desire to become a probation officer for children and adolescents.

Kristina Ranttila

Kristina Ranttila gave her heart and soul to her family and friends every day. She was the most loving person and cared deeply for the people in her life. Everyone knew her for her beautiful flowers and yard and professional-level baking. People waited impatiently each year for her Christmas cookies. She lived each day primarily for her husband and children. Kristina strongly valued education and training and it was the dream of her and her husband to see their children earn degrees.

William Ranttila

William Ranttila is Dr. Ranttila’s father. While the initial scholarship was in memory of Sharla, Dr. Ranttila wanted to honor her father while he could share in the joy of presenting a scholarship. Bill worked at GM for almost 40 years as the superintendent of the paint department. He is an Army veteran and has served as Commander of the Army Navy 422 Garrison and is an Executive Officer of the Girard American Legion. He is a leader, a friend, and the best dad around. He is a proud alumnus of Leavittsburg High School, which is now LaBrae High School.

Jeremy Rothman

Jeremy Rothman and Dr. Ranttila were engaged to be married when Jeremy passed away unexpectedly. He was an amazing friend to anyone who knew him and fierce supporter of those he loved. Jeremy was an avid golfer and OSU fan. He worked as a project manager at Stericycle for 17 years. The RSF golf outing is held in his memory. Fundraising also supports a trust fund established for Jeremy’s beloved nephews Nathan and Corey.
